Ben Folds joined forces with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra to close out the 2025 Talcott Mountain Music Festival at the Simsbury Performing Arts Center on July 25. Folds, known for his ability to fit the piano into just about any genre, has become a true master of his trade; from leading his alternative rock band Ben Folds Five to ongoing collaborations with symphony orchestras across the country, he's a testament to musical versatility and adaptation.
Led by conductor Adam Boyles, the evening's pairing with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra made for the perfect companion to Folds' piano rock. The group of musicians led a set of fifteen songs spanning Folds' illustrious career, including songs such as "Capable of Anything," "Zak and Sara," "Landed," and longtime favorite "The Luckiest." As a bonus treat, Tim Harrington of the band Tall Heights joined the stage on guitar for a rendition of "Kristine From the 7th Grade."
An evening with something for all ages, the audience ranged from longtime fans of Folds' music sat in the front row, to parents introducing their kids to the joys of music as they played about the back of the lawn. And that joy of music was central to the entire evening; ticket sales benefitted both the continuing musical education opportunities at the Hartford Symphony Orchestra as well Folds' Keys for Kids Foundation. It may have been a hot and humid night, but the concert's serenade made for a feeling of lightness and joy for attendees of all ages and walks of life.
